If you have a dachshund you may already be aware of IVDD which can affect as many as one in four sausage dogs. We are very IVDD aware after our own little daxi/terrier cross 'Penny' was struck down with grade 4 IVDD in January 2022. Penny lost use of her back legs and was in excruciating pain due to a ruptured disc which required immediate spinal surgery. Weeks of crate rest and home physio, followed by hydrotherapy saw Penny slowly regain feeling in her legs, however some permanent nerve damage was done limiting her recovery to around 75% - Penny is now 'Penny Noodle Legs' but is happy and pain free, living her best life, with some adaptations.
Owners who have been through an episode of IVDD with their dachshund, often have additional worries about leaving them, which is completely understandable. Here are Mini Mutts Retreat we have measures in place to help aid lifestyle management, such as sofa and garden ramps, stairgates, and slip resistant rugs. We also have a top quality stroller available for wobbly walkers and senior guests.
If you have a dachshund and have concerns about home boarding, talk to us, we may be able to help you have a worry free holiday.
Please note we can offer boarding to dachshunds who have recovered from surgery/conservative care only, we are not qualified to offer rehabilitation.
I've been wanting to write a blog for so long now, but a life busy with dogs leaves little time for sitting down and writing, however my 'new year, new me' resolution means I've decided to take a little time to myself on a quiet evening, or when the dogs are snoozing on the sofa in an afternoon. So... here we are !
I thought I'd start with a brief introduction to Mini Mutts Retreat and our style of dog home boarding.
We founded Mini Mutts Retreat in 2014 and have seen many changes as we have learnt and grown over the years, and we have evolved into the small dogs only dog home boarding hotel in Gosport that we are today. We prioritise the happiness and wellbeing of our own and guest doggies over everything else so it is essential that all dogs are able to interact positively. When doggy friendships blossom it is wonderful and makes our job so rewarding.
Many people hold the view that dog boarding is easy, and all you need to have is a love of dogs, well I can tell you that is not accurate, Yes of course you must love dogs, but in reality that is only a small part of what is involved. There is so much more in the way of certification, licensing, cleaning, insurance, accounting, paperwork, and marketing, and most importantly having the knowledge and expertise to maintain a safe, happy and harmonious multi dog environment and that comes with experience. Dog boarding in your own home can impact your home life style and relationships, and if you have dogs of your own, their needs and personalities need to be considered too. Not all dogs are happy sharing their home and humans with others. Thankfully Penny and Indie are seasoned hosts who happily share their lives and home with well mannered visiting dogs, but we are very careful to give them, and us a much needed break a few times a year.
As one of the longest established dog home boarders in Gosport, we have made many friendly relationships with other professional dog care businesses in the local area and happily refer enquiries to each other when appropriate, so if we cannot help you it's likely we can recommend another licensed dog boarding business.
